My house is 100+ years old with original single-pane, wood windows and original doors. It is drafty and poorly insulated. The attic now has R-38 insulation, but there is no insulation in the wood walls or under the off-grade wood floors. It is very hard to heat and cool.

The a/c used to be all window units and the heat was all individual natural gas units. No surprise that in cold winter months the gas bill easily topped $300 while in hot summer months the electric was $300+, even though I was careful to limit usage to just rooms being occupied.

About a year ago, Economy installed a Mitsubishi split system with five inside units, in the four bedrooms and kitchen. Installation was first class. They took their time and did everything right. They consulted with me about placement of every part and I am completely satisfied. I crawled under the house to check and all the plumbing was in direct runs and properly hung under the house.

After nearly a year of use I've had a few minor complaints:

One of the units made an annoying dripping noise. Since the units are mounted near the ceiling, condensate is routed down a 10-foot pipe and in this unit it made a very loud noise. They worked on it a couple of times, reducing the noise. I was able to end it altogether by ensuring the drain pipe was not touching anything else at the bottom of its run.

At one point I had a houseful of guests and one of the units was only marginally cooling. They came out right away and determined that the coolant load was not quite right. After adjusting it, the unit began cooling properly. This was the first time I had heavily loaded the system, using all five units at once, so it was understandable it needed attention.

There is an ongoing problem that once in a while one of the units will enter a mode where the fan cycles between high and low speed every 15-20 seconds. It does not affect the cooling, but is annoying to hear. Dustin is consulting with Mitsubishi on this problem.

There are pluses and minuses to these systems. First the minuses:

    - it turns out that split systems do not dry out the air as much as conventional systems. This is just their nature. The result is the room will not feel as cool at the same temperature. People with dry sinuses might actually find this to be an advantage.

    - the remote control on these systems, while ultimately very simple to use, is kind of clunky and strange and has no built-in light for night use.

    - the thermostat for each room is in the unit mounted near the ceiling. This means you have to adjust the temp not for where you are down near the floor, but for what it is near the ceiling and it can vary depending on lots of factors. They sell a more conventional thermostat, but it is quite expensive. It takes a little getting used to.

    - In winter, it takes the heat pump a long time to heat a cold room and when it's really cold it struggles to maintain the temp. I miss the almost instant heat of the gas units (but not the cost!).

    Now the pluses:

    - I heat and cool only the rooms I am using. Compared to a conventional central unit, this is huge.

    - The units are quiet inside and out. The outside unit is so quiet that sometimes I have to actually stand next to it to confirm it is running! This was important to me and I am very pleased. The inside units are far quieter than the window a/c and even the gas heaters. Very nice.

    - While on the coldest & hottest days the units can struggle they have kept me comfortable.

    - My highest bill so far while making heavy use of the system has been $138! This amazes me because I have not been as careful as before to turn off units in unoccupied rooms.

In summary, this system is not for everyone, but for this old house it is just the thing. I can recommend Economy and Mitsubishi.
